When Can I Drive After 6 Beers?

Six beers — a full six-pack — is a significant drinking session. For all but the heaviest adults, this will result in a BAC well above 0.08%, with recovery time stretching into the next morning for many people. If you are planning a night where six beers might happen, plan your transportation now.

The Math: How BAC Is Calculated

BAC is calculated using the Widmark formula: BAC = (ethanol grams × 100) / (weight_kg × r × 1000), where r = 0.68 for males and r = 0.55 for females, and weight_kg = lb / 2.205.

Six standard US beers (355 ml each at 5% ABV) contain approximately 84 grams of ethanol — equivalent to 6 standard drinks, or about one six-pack. Alcohol is then eliminated at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour. The table below shows peak BAC (no metabolism during drinking) and the hours needed to reach key thresholds.

BAC Chart for 6 Standard Beers by Weight and Sex

Peak BAC immediately after consuming 6 standard beers, before any metabolism is applied. Hours to 0.08% and 0.00% are calculated from this peak at 0.015%/hr.

What If You Drank Over More Than 1 Hour?

Spreading 6 beers over 6 hours allows elimination of 6 × 0.015% = 0.090% during the drinking period. For a 200 lb male (peak BAC ~0.109%), pacing over 6 hours reduces effective BAC to about 0.019% by the end. This is the difference between a long wait and being nearly clear — but only with very consistent pacing.

What Factors Make Your BAC Higher or Lower?

The Bottom Line: When Is It Safe to Drive?

Six beers requires planning ahead. Most adults will need 6–12 hours after their last drink before reaching 0.00% BAC. The morning-after check is essential. Use our BAC calculator with your last drink time to estimate your current BAC if you are unsure about driving the next day.

The legal limit in most US states is 0.08%. Utah's limit is 0.05%. Commercial drivers face a 0.04% limit. International limits are often lower (0.05% in most of Europe, 0.02% in Sweden and Poland). If you are driving internationally or professionally, use the appropriate threshold.

When in doubt, do not drive. A ride-share, taxi, or designated driver is always the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after a six-pack can I drive?

After a full six-pack of standard beers: a 180 lb male has a peak BAC of approximately 0.137%, requiring about 3.8 hours to reach 0.08% and 9.1 hours to reach 0.00%. A 160 lb female has a peak BAC of approximately 0.189%, needing about 7.3 hours to reach 0.08% and 12.6 hours to reach 0.00%.

Is 6 beers considered binge drinking?

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) defines binge drinking as consuming enough alcohol to bring BAC to 0.08% or higher — typically 4 drinks in 2 hours for women and 5 drinks in 2 hours for men. Six beers exceeds the binge drinking threshold for all adults.

Can I drive the next morning after 6 beers?

If you finished 6 beers at midnight and wake at 8 a.m. (8 hours later): a 180 lb male (peak 0.137%) would have: 0.137% − 0.120% = 0.017% remaining — under the legal limit but not zero. A 140 lb female (peak 0.196%) would have: 0.196% − 0.120% = 0.076% — still near the legal limit. Heavy drinkers should check carefully before morning driving.
