When Can I Drive After 5 Shots?

Five shots of spirits in a single session places virtually everyone in a high-BAC scenario with significant impairment and long clearance times. Whether consumed as shots at a bar, in cocktails over an evening, or mixed into drinks at a party, five standard drinks' worth of spirits will result in BAC levels that require many hours to clear.

The Math: How BAC Is Calculated

BAC is calculated using the Widmark formula: BAC = (ethanol grams × 100) / (weight_kg × r × 1000), where r = 0.68 for males and r = 0.55 for females, and weight_kg = lb / 2.205.

Five standard shots (44 ml each at 40% ABV) contain approximately 70 grams of ethanol — equivalent to 5 standard drinks. Alcohol is then eliminated at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour. The table below shows peak BAC (no metabolism during drinking) and the hours needed to reach key thresholds.

BAC Chart for 5 Standard Shots by Weight and Sex

Peak BAC immediately after consuming 5 standard shots, before any metabolism is applied. Hours to 0.08% and 0.00% are calculated from this peak at 0.015%/hr.

Weight Male BAC Female BAC Male → 0.08% Female → 0.08% Male → 0.00% Female → 0.00%
120 lb 0.189% 0.234% 7.3 hrs 10.3 hrs 12.6 hrs 15.6 hrs

What If You Drank Over More Than 1 Hour?

Spreading 5 shots over 5 hours eliminates 0.075% BAC during drinking. For a 200 lb male (peak 0.113%), effective BAC at 5 hours is about 0.038%. For a 160 lb female (peak 0.174%), effective BAC at 5 hours is about 0.099% — still above the legal limit.

What Factors Make Your BAC Higher or Lower?

The Bottom Line: When Is It Safe to Drive?

Five shots means planning not to drive until the next morning in most cases, especially for lighter individuals and women. If you plan an evening involving 5+ drinks, arrange a ride-share, designated driver, or accommodation in advance.

The legal limit in most US states is 0.08%. Utah's limit is 0.05%. Commercial drivers face a 0.04% limit. International limits are often lower (0.05% in most of Europe, 0.02% in Sweden and Poland). If you are driving internationally or professionally, use the appropriate threshold.

When in doubt, do not drive. A ride-share, taxi, or designated driver is always the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long to sober up after 5 shots?

For a 180 lb male (peak BAC ~0.143%), about 4.2 hours to reach 0.08% and 9.5 hours to reach 0.00%. For a 140 lb female (peak BAC ~0.204%), about 8.3 hours to reach 0.08% and 13.6 hours to reach 0.00%.

Is 5 shots dangerous?

Five shots in a short period represents binge drinking. BAC levels above 0.15% impair multiple cognitive and motor functions severely. At 0.20%+, risk of injury and unconsciousness rises. Above 0.30%, life-threatening alcohol poisoning becomes a risk, especially for smaller individuals.

Can I drive the next morning after 5 shots?

If you took 5 shots at 10 p.m. and wake at 7 a.m. (9 hours): a 180 lb male (peak 0.143%) would have 0.143% − 0.135% = 0.008% — nearly zero. A 130 lb female (peak 0.219%) would have 0.219% − 0.135% = 0.084% — still over the legal limit. Check the table for your weight.
