When Can I Drive After 2 Shots?

Two shots of spirits is a common amount — two rounds at a bar, two cocktails at a party. Whether it is safe to drive depends entirely on your weight, sex, and how quickly you drank them. The table below provides the exact BAC and wait times using the Widmark formula.

The Math: How BAC Is Calculated

BAC is calculated using the Widmark formula: BAC = (ethanol grams × 100) / (weight_kg × r × 1000), where r = 0.68 for males and r = 0.55 for females, and weight_kg = lb / 2.205.

Two standard shots (44 ml each at 40% ABV) contain approximately 28 grams of ethanol — equivalent to 2 standard drinks, the same as 2 beers. Alcohol is then eliminated at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour. The table below shows peak BAC (no metabolism during drinking) and the hours needed to reach key thresholds.

BAC Chart for 2 Standard Shots by Weight and Sex

Peak BAC immediately after consuming 2 standard shots, before any metabolism is applied. Hours to 0.08% and 0.00% are calculated from this peak at 0.015%/hr.

What If You Drank Over More Than 1 Hour?

Two shots consumed over 2 hours allows 0.030% BAC to be eliminated during drinking. For a 160 lb male (peak 0.057%), effective BAC at 2 hours is about 0.027%. For a 140 lb female (peak 0.081%), effective BAC at 2 hours is about 0.051% — under the legal limit.

What Factors Make Your BAC Higher or Lower?

The Bottom Line: When Is It Safe to Drive?

After 2 standard shots, lighter women should wait 1–5 hours to reach the legal limit and 5–8 hours to reach 0.00%. Heavier males may be under 0.08% immediately but should still wait 3–4 hours to clear. If your drinks were doubles or the spirits were over 40% ABV, add additional time.

The legal limit in most US states is 0.08%. Utah's limit is 0.05%. Commercial drivers face a 0.04% limit. International limits are often lower (0.05% in most of Europe, 0.02% in Sweden and Poland). If you are driving internationally or professionally, use the appropriate threshold.

When in doubt, do not drive. A ride-share, taxi, or designated driver is always the right call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive after 2 shots of whiskey?

It depends on your weight and sex. Two shots of standard whiskey (40% ABV) contain 28g ethanol. A 200 lb male will have a BAC of about 0.045% — under the limit. A 130 lb female will have a BAC of about 0.090% — over the limit. Check the table for your weight.

How long after 2 shots is it safe to drive?

For a 160 lb male (BAC ~0.057%), you are already under 0.08%, but wait about 3.8 hours to clear completely. For a 140 lb female (BAC ~0.081%), wait about 0.1 hour to reach 0.08% and 5.4 hours to reach 0.00%.

What if the shots were 50% ABV instead of 40%?

Two shots at 50% ABV (e.g., Everclear, some whiskeys) contain 35g of ethanol — 25% more than two standard shots. This proportionally increases BAC and wait times. Always check the bottle for ABV.
