The 35ml spirit measure is common in Scottish pubs (where it is the standard single), Irish bars, and many European venues. It delivers 40% more alcohol than a 25ml measure, but many drinkers count it the same as a "single shot." At 40% ABV, a 35ml measure contains 11.0g of ethanol — nearly one US standard drink in a single pour.

How to Calculate Grams in a 35ml Spirit Shot

Formula: 35 ml × ABV (decimal) × 0.789 = grams. For 40% ABV: 35 × 0.40 × 0.789 = 11.0g. This is 0.79 US standard drinks or 1.38 UK units. The full table:

35ml vs 25ml vs 44ml: The Shot Size Comparison

A Scottish drinker counting "4 singles" at 35ml, 40% has consumed 44g of ethanol. An English drinker counting "4 singles" at 25ml, 40% has consumed only 31.7g. The same "4 singles" count represents 38% more alcohol in Scotland than in England — this is why the measure size must always be specified. For the 25ml guide, see 25ml spirit grams by ABV.

Scottish vs English Measure: Why It Matters

Scotland's mandatory 35ml measure was introduced partly because Scottish whisky culture traditionally involved larger pours. When calculating BAC from "a few whiskies" at a Scottish pub, always use 35ml — not the 25ml English measure. Three 35ml shots of 40% whisky (33.1g) produces a BAC of 0.070% for a 70kg man, pushing him close to the UK 0.08% driving limit. If he mistakenly calculated based on 25ml measures, he would estimate only 0.050% — a dangerous underestimate.

Always input the correct measure size in the BAC calculator. Scottish/Irish bars typically serve 35ml; English bars serve 25ml. The difference adds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 35ml shot one UK unit?

No — at 40% ABV, a 35ml shot contains 11.0g = 1.38 UK units (at 8g per unit). A UK unit is 10ml or 8g of pure ethanol. The only shot size that approximates one UK unit is a 25ml measure at 40% ABV (7.9g ≈ 1 unit). When counting units, always check your measure size.

How many 35ml shots equal one US standard drink?

At 40% ABV: 14g / 11.0g = 1.27 shots. Approximately one and a quarter 35ml shots equal one US standard drink (14g). This means 4 Scottish measures equal approximately 5 US standard drinks in terms of alcohol content — a significant difference if you are using a US-calibrated BAC calculator.

What is a standard drink in Ireland?

Ireland defines one standard drink as 10g of ethanol (same as Poland, Australia). A 35ml shot at 40% ABV contains 11.0g = 1.10 Irish standard drinks. So a 35ml Irish measure at 40% is slightly more than one Irish standard drink — another case where serving size and national standard misalign.
