25ml Spirit Shot: Grams of Alcohol at Every ABV

A 25ml 40% spirit shot = 7.9g = 0.56 US standard drinks. Enter your spirit's exact ABV and measure size for a precise BAC estimate.

The 25ml spirit measure is the standard single shot in UK pubs and bars. Whether it is gin, whisky, vodka, rum, or tequila, the 25ml measure keeps alcohol delivery consistent — but the grams vary dramatically depending on ABV. A 25ml shot of 40% spirit has 7.9g of ethanol. A 25ml shot of 60% high-proof spirit has 11.8g — 50% more alcohol in the same volume.

How to Calculate Grams in a 25ml Spirit Shot

Formula: 25 ml × ABV (decimal) × 0.789 = grams. For 40% ABV: 25 × 0.40 × 0.789 = 7.9g. This is 0.56 US standard drinks (14g) or 0.99 UK units (8g) — essentially exactly one UK pub unit. See the full table for all common spirit ABVs:

Why UK Pub Shots Are 25ml (or 35ml)

In England and Wales, the Weights and Measures Act requires that spirits be served in 25ml or 35ml measures (with 50ml as a double of the smaller). Scotland mandates 25ml as the minimum. The reason for 25ml is historical — it approximates one UK unit (10ml/8g of ethanol) at 40% ABV, making mental arithmetic easier for drinkers trying to track their units.

A 25ml shot of 40% vodka = 7.9g = 0.99 UK units ≈ 1 unit. This is not a coincidence — the 25ml measure was standardised partly to make unit counting intuitive. However, craft spirits, premium gins, and aged whiskies are now commonly 43–50% ABV, meaning a 25ml measure delivers 1.07–1.24 units rather than 1.0. For the 35ml shot table, see 35ml spirit grams by ABV.

Comparing Shot Sizes: 25ml vs 35ml vs 44ml (US)

Shot SizeCountry Standard40% ABV GramsUS Std DrinksUK Units
25mlUK pub single7.9g0.560.99
35mlUK/European double11.0g0.791.38
44ml (1.5 fl oz)US standard shot13.9g0.991.74
50mlUK pub double (of 25ml)15.8g1.131.97

The most important number: a US standard 1.5 fl oz (44ml) shot of 40% spirit contains 13.9g — essentially exactly one US standard drink (14g). But a UK 25ml shot at the same ABV contains only 7.9g — just over half a US standard drink. If you are using a US BAC calculator but drinking UK pub measures, you are counting wrong.

High-Proof Spirits: When ABV Matters Most

Craft spirits, cask-strength whiskies, and navy-strength gins can be 55–65% ABV. A 25ml shot of 60% ABV spirit contains 11.8g — nearly as much as a US standard drink in a tiny 25ml serve. Bartenders often pour these at the standard measure without warning. Always check the ABV of craft spirits before calculating your intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 25ml shots equal one US standard drink?

At 40% ABV: 14g / 7.9g = 1.77 shots. So nearly two UK 25ml shots equal one US standard drink. If you are comparing UK and US drink counts, this difference matters significantly for BAC calculations.

Is a 25ml shot enough to feel alcohol?

For most adults, 7.9g of ethanol from a 25ml 40% shot produces a BAC of approximately 0.011–0.018% depending on body weight. This is below the perceptual threshold for most people (around 0.02–0.03%). You are unlikely to feel any effect from a single 25ml shot. The effect accumulates with multiple shots over time.

What is the strongest spirit I might encounter at a UK bar?

Navy-strength gin is typically 57% ABV; some cask-strength whiskies reach 65–70% ABV. Absinthe is often 60–80% ABV. Always ask for the ABV when ordering craft spirits — a 25ml shot at 60% ABV (11.8g) contains 50% more alcohol than a standard 25ml 40% shot (7.9g).
